FREEDOM

Problems that can have spiritual roots:
  • Repeated sins (John 8:34)
  • Physical illness (Luke 13:11)
  • Financial famine (2 Samuel 21:1)
  • Accident-proneness (1 Kings 16:34)
  • Nightmares, anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses (1 Samuel 16:14; Isaiah 61:3; Daniel 4:33; Mark 5:15)

Christians can be “demonized”:
  • The Bible does not use the terms “oppressed” nor “possessed.”
  • The Greek word is daimonizomai (“demonized” or “subject to demonic influence”)
  • Christians are told not to give place to the devil (Ephesians 4:27) and not to be entangled with bondage (Galatians 5:1)

Types of demons mentioned in the Bible:
  • Fear (2 Timothy 1:7)
  • Death (John 10:10)
  • Lust (Hosea 5:4)
  • Addiction (Romans 8:15)
  • Infirmity (Luke 13:11)
  • Pride (Proverbs 16:18)
  • Python (Acts 16:16)

Sins are open doors to demons.
Examples:
  • Occult/witchcraft (Deuteronomy 18:9-12)
       E.g., yoga, fortune telling, horoscopes
  • Demonic objects (Deuteronomy 7:26; Joshua 7:11-25; Acts 19:19)
   E.g., crystals, dream catchers
  • Bitterness/trauma (Acts 8:22-23)
  • Unforgiveness (Matthew 18:34)
  • Sexual immorality; pornography (1 Corinthians 6:16)
  • Abortion/murder (Deuteronomy 27:18-19; Genesis 4:11-12)
  • Inner vows (Matthew 12:37; Proverbs 20:25)
  • Spoken curses (Matthew 11:14, Numbers 22)
  • Stealing (Zechariah 5:4)
  • Drugs (pharmakia/sorcery) (Revalation 9:21)
  • Generational curses (Numbers 14:18; Proverbs. 3:33)

Basis for deliverance:
  • The Cross is the cure (Colossians 2:14-15)
  • Deliverance is part of sanctification.
  • The New Testament word for salvation is sozo (“to save, to deliver, to protect, to preserve, and to rescue from danger”).
    • Salvation for the spirit: forgiveness (Matthew. 1:21).
    • Salvation for the body: healing (Matthew. 9:22)
    • Salvation for the soul: deliverance (Luke 8:36).
  • Christians are made perfect in our spirit, but we are being perfected in our soul (Hebrews 10:14)
  • Salvation is not an event; it is a process (Philippians. 2:12-13).

Steps to deliverance:
  1. Identify demonic activity or open doors (John 8:31-33)
  2. Repent: confess faith in Christ, confess known sins, forgive (Leviticus 26:39-40)
  3. Renounce all contact with the devil (2 Corinthians 4:2)
  4. Cast out the demons in the name of Jesus (Mark 16:17)
  5. Resist the devil when he tries to regain control (James 4:7)
  6. Thank God for the Holy Spirit who is healing those areas.
  7. Renew your mind (Romans 12:2) by spending time with God (John 15:5)
E.g., prayer, reading the Bible, listening to God, etc.
